On July 5-6, 2013, my sons Simon (13) and David (17) Arneberg and
I embarked on our
annual family bike trip. This year we started at my brother Paul's
house in Edina, Minnesota, and biked back home to Chippewa Falls.
This trip is only about 120 miles by car, but we pedaled 158
miles, since we stuck to bike trails whenever possible.
We started off on the Chain of Lakes trail in south Minneapolis, to Minnehaha Parkway and the Missippi River Road, coming up to the bike trail on Shepherd Road that took us right through downtown St. Paul. From there we rode roads through Maplewood and Lake Elmo, crossing the bridge into Hudson, where we took county roads. After a quick stop at my friend Bruce Kaul's house, and energized by A&W in Bladwin, we made it all the way to Menomonie that first day, 101 miles -- Simon's first Century Ride of his life! The next day, we rode 100% trails: Red Cedar to the Chippewa River Trail. Schedule:
