MHBQA News: 2008 HAWAII CRUISE CHORUS

November 2-8, 2008 (After Pan-Pacific Convention)

(Last modified: $Date: 2008-06-06 15:25:51-05 $)

Following the Pan-Pacific Barbershop Convention in Honolulu (October 30 to November 2) some of the convention participants will extend their harmony on a cruise throughout the Hawaiian Islands. After watching (and/or participating in) quartets and choruses from Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and the Pacific Ocean shored parts of the Evergreen and Far Western District, the plan for Sunday is - at about 2pm - to bus to the airport, take a quick shuttle flight to Maui, and join Norwegian Cruise Lines Pride of America. (The ship will have left Honolulu on Saturday, but no barbershopper in his or her right mind would dream of leaving a convention on the final day!!!)

The cruise chorus of 40 voices will be directed by Drayton Justus, past president of the BHS, Quartet Gold Medal lead in Gentlemen's Agreement (1971), and in later years (1980-85 and 1991) the fill-in lead for the Suntones, 1960 Quartet Champs. Over the years Drayton has been the director of several chapter choruses, as well as singing in various choruses. His wife, Sue Ann, has sung in top Sweet Adelines quartets and is also a chorus director; count on Sue Ann to be involved as well in the on-board chorus adventures.

Ports of call will be Maui (until 2pm on Monday), all day Tuesday in Hilo, all day Wednesday in Kona (both Hilo and Kona are on the Big Island of Hawaii), and Thursday and Friday until noon in Kauai. On Friday afternoon the chorus plans its on-board show as the ship slowly and reluctantly returns to its home port of Honolulu. Saturday puts everyone back in the port of Honolulu by 7am.

Music has not yet been selected... stay tuned, and we'll list them here! Possibilities are Beyond the Reef and I'll Remember You (Hawaiian songs), Darkness on the Delta, Nellie and more! There may also be a "mix and match" quartet contest, with quartet members matched on-board. Of course, the judging categories will be slightly different than those at the Pan-Pacific Convention, probably categories like MOST IMAGINATIVE, MOST HUMOROUS, MOST OUTRAGEOUS, BEST SINGING, BEST LOOKING...

Stay tuned, and we'll let you know more... Right now, there are over 40 Australian barbershoppers and wives signed up, among the other Canadian and U.S. barbershop singers... so the chorus may have a VERY Southern (Down Under!) flavor to its vowel matching!

To find out if there are still staterooms available, contact Travelex International - Bill Marcum - at 1-800-882-0499, or email Bill at [billm@excapes.com] Inside cabins (category II) run $1309 per person if you leave Honolulu with the ship on Saturday, or $1485 if you wish to stay and participate in the Pan Pacific Barbershop Convention through Sunday morning and then catch the shuttle to the ship in Maui. Ask Bill for info on Oceanview cabins (category EE, at $1589 for Saturday departures or $1765 for Sunday departures) or Balcony cabins (category BB, $1829 Saturday departure.)

And oh yeah... Kim and Jerry Orloff of MHBQA infamy will be the escorts, organizing all of the barbershop adventures on board ship. Any questions, [orloffs@ix.netcom.com] will reach Jerry.
